Right now, we have Barnes checking in at #5 on our list. Through his junior season, he has compiled nearly 1,000 points and over 400 rebounds. That might not sound impressive compared to others on the list, but he only played 3 quarters during most of his games this season as his team went 25-0 (margin of victory was about 30 ppg) and captured a state title. Just taking ball park figures it is our guess that Barnes will finish his career with about 1,600 points and nearly 700 rebounds… and a shot at a second straight state title.

However, there is some speculation that Barnes may attend a boarding/prep school next year in order to better challenge himself on the court while also preparing him for what it's like to live away from home and balance school with travelling across the country to compete. If goes this route it won't diminish the fact that he will go down as one of the all-time greats in Iowa HS hoops history.

In fact, if he goes onto experience similar levels of success in college as those on the list above him and eventually have a career in the NBA he could jump to the top spot. However, we will let the young man put in the work and see if he lives up to his and everyone else's expectations. This is often easier said than done, but Barnes seems like the type of kid who will exceed expectations and blaze his own trail.

So, support this young man no matter where he goes because this is a kid who will make all Iowans proud. Good luck HB… we'll be watching.

Woodley Named New Waukee High School Coach

Matt Woodley, the former assistant basketball coach at Washington State University, has been named the new Head Boy's Basketball Coach at Waukee High School in Waukee. Woodley succeeds Ross Douma, who resigned from Waukee to take the Head Men's Basketball position at Dordt College in Sioux Center.

Getting Woodley is a coup for Waukee. He brings a high level of intensity, and has roots in the Des Moines area from his time at Drake University. Although Douma's son Dustin, a sophomore at Waukee this year, will undoubtedly make the move with his dad, the cupboard is certainly not bare for Woodley's first season at the helm. They return two juniors with starting experience from last season: 6-10 Will Artino (12.4 ppg) and Chad Owens (4.9 ppg). Also returning is sophomore starter Jonny Getting (8.5 ppg).

This bio of Woodley was taken from his page on the Washington State University Website:

"Matt Woodley spent three seasons as an assistant coach at Washington State University from 2006-09. A highly respected recruiter, Woodley dealt with recruiting and game scouting at WSU, while actively involved in practice. During his stint at WSU, the Cougars made three consecutive postseason appearances (two NCAA, one NIT), the second such occurrence in school history.

Woodley joined the Cougar family in 2006-07 with over six years of coaching experience under his belt. A graduate of Drake University, Woodley came to the Palouse after a two-year stint as an assistant coach at Middle Tennessee.

With the Blue Raiders and head coach Kermit Davis, Woodley's responsibilities included recruiting, scouting, scheduling and film exchange, as well as the day-to-day preparation of the team. His strong work ethic was evident on the recruiting trail as he helped land several players within Middle Tennessee's young and talented signing class in 2004.

Prior to Middle Tennessee, the intense and knowledgeable Woodley spent over three years as an assistant coach at Denver. With the Pioneers, the West Des Moines, Iowa, native assisted with all aspects of the team, including recruiting, scouting, scheduling and on-floor practices. Before becoming an assistant at Denver, Woodley spent a year as a graduate assistant at Wayne (Neb.) State, where he served as the recruiting coordinator and assisted in game preparation and scouting.

During his three-year career (1998-2000) as a point guard at Drake, Woodley started every game and ended as the Bulldogs' all-time career leader in steals (198) and second in 3-pointers (188). He twice earned honorable mention honors from the Missouri Valley Conference and was named the team's most valuable player his senior year. Woodley graduated in 2000 with a bachelor's degree in elementary education.

Coaching was a family calling for Woodley, whose father and three brothers are all in the business. His father Mike is the head football coach at Grandview College in Iowa, his brother Joe, who was a senior captain on the Iowa State football team, serves as the defensive coordinator at Grandview College, his brother Brian is the head football coach at Johnston High School in Iowa, while his brother Andy, who was the starting point guard at Northern Iowa, is the head basketball coach at Iowa City College."

Weekend of April 25-26

A good weekend of high school basketball coming up for the weekend of April 25-26. Several of the state's AAU programs are in action this weekend:

The All Iowa Attack are at the String Music Showcase in Nashville, TN... games start tonight, and there is a ton of talent in Nashville this weekend. The Attack have two 17U teams, two 16U teams, and a 15U team playing this weekend.

Bound For Glory and Iowa Elite, two of the newer programs in the state, are headed to Sioux Falls, SD for the Sanford Sports SpringJam. B4G is represented in the 17U, 16U, and 15U age groups, while the Elite has a 16U team there.

The Iowa Barnstormers and Iowa Mavericks are headed to the Twin Cities for the Minnesota Pump 'N Run Spring Showcase. The Barnstormers have 17U, 16U, and 15U teams in Minnesota, while the Mavericks have two 17s and two 16s.

The Iowa Magic are headed to Shawnee, KS for a MAYB event hosted by the KC Premiere. They've got 17U, 16U, and 15U teams there, as well as some middle school teams.

I think that's it... it appears that the Martin Brothers, Cornsharks, Knicks, IBCA, etc, are all off this weekend. If I missed any high school teams, let me know. We'll try to keep you posted on how everyone fares.

IAHoops.com

Hey everyone... working on a new look and feel, a whole new direction for the IAHoops.com website. We started IAHoops.com as a ranking site... got a little sidetracked and ended up with a message board, and then forgot about it entirely... it ended up being a very little used, flashy but uncontrolled bulletin board serice.

Well, we're starting over... with rankings. What was old is new again, right? You'll see our rankings posted soon for the Iowa High School classes, as well as coverage of some of the events we see in the state of Iowa and around the midwest. You can still "comment" on the rankings, because this is just a blog at it's heart. I think you'll like the new direction, and we promise to do a better job keeping up!
