He was selected #3 in the 1998 NBA Draft and has had a pretty good professional career despite numerous injuries. |
Right now, we have Barnes checking in at #5 on our list. Through his junior season, he has compiled nearly 1,000 points and over 400 rebounds. That might not sound impressive compared to others on the list, but he only played 3 quarters during most of his games this season as his team went 25-0 (margin of victory was about 30 ppg) and captured a state title. Just taking ball park figures it is our guess that Barnes will finish his career with about 1,600 points and nearly 700 rebounds… and a shot at a second straight state title.
However, there is some speculation that Barnes may attend a boarding/prep school next year in order to better challenge himself on the court while also preparing him for what it's like to live away from home and balance school with travelling across the country to compete. If goes this route it won't diminish the fact that he will go down as one of the all-time greats in Iowa HS hoops history.
In fact, if he goes onto experience similar levels of success in college as those on the list above him and eventually have a career in the NBA he could jump to the top spot. However, we will let the young man put in the work and see if he lives up to his and everyone else's expectations. This is often easier said than done, but Barnes seems like the type of kid who will exceed expectations and blaze his own trail.
So, support this young man no matter where he goes because this is a kid who will make all Iowans proud. Good luck HB… we'll be watching.
this is pretty cool. i hadnt ever thought about that. i forgot lafrentz was such a high pick!
ReplyDeleteso my next question is- you just did the last 20 years. whos the greatest of all time? would that change this list much?
Pretty agreeable list. Only change I would make would be leap frogging Gatens over Spanich and Bohannon, and then I think it is about perfect.
ReplyDeleteRicky Davis was a first round pick a year out of High School. Having Brunner, Horner and Oliver ahead of him is kind of a joke.
ReplyDeleteI hear that Barnes might be considering going to Europe for a year and skip college. I also see that he is ranked the #1 recruit in the country by Rivals. I think that shoots him up a notch or two on the list.
ReplyDeleteCorrect on Ricky Davis He should be top 5
ReplyDeleteI think AL Lorenzen should be on this list. Let's not forget his senior year McDonalds first Team All American. Rated top 4 players in the nation in 1984.He is the second highest player ever rated out of Iowa next to Barnes. Harrison has not done that yet has he? Maybe next year.
ReplyDelete"Prep all-America by Parade, National Coaches, McDonald's, Street and Smith's, Al McGuire's Top Five and USA Today...rated the No. 4 high school player in the country by Parade.
IM OLD SCHOOL BABY
List seems reasonable. I know Davis went pro early and has bee decent, but he also didn't have the same type of stats/career in high school as those higher on the list. Also, this list is only going back 20 years, so I guess that's why Big Al isn't on it. He would have to be easily one of the Top 10 in Iowa history wouldn't he?
ReplyDeleteI think Randy Kraayenbrink and Neil Fegebank from Paullina deserve some consideration for this list. I Randy is the 2nd all-time scorer at UNI and shared the 1982 Mr. Basketball of Iowa award while leading Paullina to two titles. Fegebank won 88 straight games at Paullina including three state titles. Later went on to play a considerable amount of time and letter three years at Iowa.
ReplyDeleteAl Lorenzen would definitely be high on the list, but played over 20 years ago. Ditto for Mark Gannon, Bobby Hanson and many others.
ReplyDeleteMan were going way back I feel young again!
ReplyDeleteSorry but Worley is ranked way to high. Higher than Ricky Davis please.
Where is Adam Haluska? He was way up there on the scoring list in high school and led the Big Ten is scoring his senior year at Iowa.
ReplyDeleteAgreed... Haluska should be on this list. Probably not top 10 material, but he'd be a good fit for 15-20. Idk who I'd take off, though.
ReplyDeleteDon't mean to nitpick but Collison didn't lead his team to four straight titles.....back-to-back in 98 and 99 I believe.
ReplyDeleteKyle Korver??
